Bad sleep can cause this insidious health problem in women

Bad sleep can cause this insidious health problem in women Bad sleep can cause this insidious health problem in women It’s time to get attention for your insomnia, and to solve why it takes you so long to fall asleep. When it comes to poor sleep encroaching on their health, women don’t have a lot of margin for error.Minor sleep issues, like trouble falling asleep and insomnia, can lead to raised blood pressure in women â€" even if you end up getting enough sleep during the night. That’s according to a new study from Columbia University Irving Medical Center.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! While it is already known that serious sleep disturbances like chronic sleep deprivation can negatively  effect on cardiovascular health, the study focuses on more minor sleep problems and the serious cardiovascular effects they can have.Women are more likely to have these milder sleep issues than men â€" they’re twice as likely to have chronic insomnia, for example.“That’s concerning since st udies have shown that sleep deprivation and milder sleep problems have a disproportionate effect on cardiovascular health in women,” says Brooke Aggarwal, the study’s lead author and a behavioral scientist at Columbia’s Department of Medicine, in a release. The findingsThe study looked at 323 women in good health and tracked their blood pressure and sleep habits. They were three times more likely to have mild sleep problems (like bad-quality sleep, having trouble falling asleep, or insomnia) than serious sleep problems like sleep apnea. The women who had mild sleep issues â€" even those who slept for seven to nine hours a night â€" were “significantly” more likely to have elevated blood pressure.Said Aggarwal, “It may be prudent to screen women for milder sleep disturbances in an effort to help prevent cardiovascular disease.”The study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

3 Ways to Stop Thinking About Work When Youre Not There

3 Ways to Stop Thinking About Work When Youre Not There 3 Ways to Stop Thinking About Work When Youre Not There Whether you love your job or hate it, you probably think about work on your off hours at some point. You kick around a particularly perplexing problem or grouchy client. You ponder how to deal with your boss’ latest antics. You brainstorm about how you’re going to get the heck out of there. But there’s definitely a point at which this moves from helpful to, well, not so much. In my experience, that point is typically when you find yourself panicking in the middle of the night about what’s going on at the office, writing work to-dos on your grocery list, and receiving fewer and fewer calls from friends (because, um, all you do is talk about your job). In other words, bringing too much work home- even if that work is just rolling around in your head- can quickly make you an anxious, sleep-deprived, pretty boring dinner guest (and, yes, I know this from experience). I also know that telling yourself to “think about work less” doesn’t quite work, so I loved the tips that Fast Company recently offered for training your brain to leave work at work. Here are a few of my favorites: 1. Create Transition Rituals Your commute home is a physical act that separates you from the office, but try to add something mental to that activity, too. Laura Vanderkam, the article’s author, recommends “listening to or reading something light,” but I find jamming to your favorite tunes, playing a tough game on your phone, or calling a friend also does the trick. As Vanderkam recommends, “ask your family members (or friends or roommates) about their days, and challenge yourself to be a good listener. Focusing on other people and their needs is a great way to get out of your own head.” 2. Give Your Brain a Different Problem to Solve If your mind is still spinning after leaving the office, channel that energy into something else. Wondering whether you should attend your cousin’s destination wedding? Trying to decide what color to paint the bathroom? Use the immediate post-work time to think about that. If you’re still getting distracted, hold yourself accountable: Ask a co-worker or friend for a problem to solve, then promise you’ll have some thoughts on it by the time you get home. 3. Give Yourself a “Worry Time” This is probably one of the most helpful tips I’ve found, especially if I’m thinking about a particularly hairy problem: Schedule a later time to stress. Think, “I’ll respond to that email tomorrow morning over coffee, and I won’t think about it until then,” or “That awful meeting is set for Tuesday, so I’ll set aside two hours on Monday to prepare for (freak out about) it.” As Vanderkam puts it, “Often, your brain just needs to know that there’s a time for thinking about that issue- and now is not that time.” What other ways have you found to leave work at work? HR Strategies to Break Down a Siloed Mentality at Work

HR Strategies to Break Down a Siloed Mentality at Work HR Strategies to Break Down a Siloed Mentality at Work If you’ve ever visited a farm, you’ve seen large grain silos. They are generally tall, and silver and they stand separate from each other. What you put in one silo doesn’t affect the others. Unfortunately, you can experience the same mentality at work when people are working in silos. What Does Working in Silos Mean for Your Workplace? When your department does X, and the neighboring department does Y, and you don’t understand each other’s processes, you work in a silo. Furthermore, when you are working in a silo environment, you tend to think that your operations are critical, and the other departments are not. Worse, when your department actively works to achieve X and the neighboring department actively works to stop X, you’re not only siloed, you’re antagonistic. This happens more often than you might think. For example, the Human Resources department wants to increase training and development budgets to help reduce turnover, while the finance department keeps slashing departmental budgets. HR can’t understand why finance is so tight-fisted, and finance can’t understand why HR keeps presenting employee training and development proposals that call for increases in the budget. You can see how difficult it is to get work done in these situations, but businesses often end up siloed. Part of this is tradition, and part of the problem comes from managers who like accomplishing their tasks and don’t want to integrate with the rest of the company. How HR Can Help People Who Are Working In Silos The HR department should be the expert in people, just like finance should be the experts in money. So, HR is well positioned to help with the breakdown of these silos. Speak the Same Language to Avoid Siloed Communication This point is not about everyone speaking English or Spanish; it is about the language of each department. Often, silos happen because, while employees say words, the other group doesn’t understand what the employees of the other department mean with the words they use. This isn’t unusual: if you’re an HR manager in a research laboratory, do you understand scientific jargon? Probably not. Moreover, if you’re a scientist, do you know all of the acronyms that HR throws at you? Stay cognizant of the fact that HR talk is not universally understood. When you speak with other departments or coach departments in how to better communicate with each other, note that the departments may not communicate successfully because of the differences in language. If you look at the above example of a conflict between HRs desire to expand training and finances need to cut the budget, you can see that a bit of translation solves the problem. What language does finance speak? Numbers. HR generally focuses on words and soft skills. So, if you come into finance and say, “We will increase employee engagement and retain our best employees if we increase our training and development opportunities,” the head of finance hears, “Blah, blah, blah, that’s expensive.” Instead say, “Every year we spend $250,000 on recruiting and training new hires. If we spend $50,000 on this new training program, we can expect to lower turnover by 10 percent. We expect to break even in two years, and save money every year after that.” That’s a proposition that finance can understand far better than the words, “employee engagement.” End the Turf Wars Between Siloed Departments Brent Gleeson identified Turf Wars as one of the causes of siloed departments. For your department to win another department must lose. Therefore, it is to your advantage to keep information secret. HR can help address compensation plans, including bonus plans, that can remove these turfs. If winning requires help from other groups, people will speak to each other. Additionally, cross training and internal transfers can cut down on the “dig in your heels” mentality. If an employee moves from operations to finance or HR, he or she brings with them a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed in the other department. This deep understanding can help all of the new departments employees see how working together is good for the business, and how overall business success is good for the individual departments. Working in Silos Starts With the Expectations of Senior Employees If the CEO enjoys watching her senior team battle with each other, you can almost guarantee she will have siloed departments. Instead, the CEO needs to work to bring her team together and reward her department heads for collaboration and teamwork. Isn’t Technology Part of the Problem When People Work in Silos? You might think that enabling people to work from home and communicate mainly through instant messages would build a fractured team. It’s possible, but fractured groups and silos existed long before email and instant messaging existed. Technology is neutral; it’s how you use it that matters. HR can encourage the use of technology to bring people together. For instance, it’s now easy to share reports among different departments. It’s also easy to talk to your coworker who is at another site or works from home. You can get instant responses and input. Make sure your employees aren’t using technology as an excuse for their bad behavior. Just like grain silos, there are gaps between departmental silos, and you lose a lot of information in these gaps. Work together with your HR team to ensure that the departments communicate with each other. Strive to create a workplace in which better understanding the goals, needs, and interconnectivity of your groups or departments brings a more cohesive team and better delivery results. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer and former human resources professional with over 10 years of experience.

How to manage your allergies at work A survival guide

How to manage your allergies at work A survival guide How to manage your allergies at work A survival guide Allergies are a blessing and a curse.Haaa, yeah, no … they’re just a curse. And unfortunately, I think most of you can relate. Allergies are annoying. If you’ve ever spontaneously hived out on your face, had to leave a social function early because your throat randomly started closing up, or called in sick to work because you can’t stop sneezing and your eyes are so puffy you can barely see‚ you get it.I’ve lived with allergies all my life. As my allergist told me a few months ago, I’m “an allergist’s poster child” - because I’ve got it allllll going on. Allergies, asthma, and eczema. BOOM.When you’re a little kid, your parents fill out a form for your teacher that says, “Hey, my kid is allergic to peanuts, help me keep them alive please” and suddenly, you’re in a peanut-free environment. I didn’t like all the hullabaloo when I was younger - I would honestly rather hive out in silence than ever affect my fellow classmates - but as an adult, in an of fice, sometimes I find myself desperately wishing I could tape up signs that say, “Peanut-Free Zone.”Needless to say, I’ve got a lot of advice for how to work (and live) as an allergy person. I enlisted my fellow allergista (cringe - we know) in the office, Aliya, to share tips for how we deal. This is how to survive in the workplace, for all of you with allergies.1. Pay attention to your triggersFrom Jacq - One of the best things you can do is pay attention not only to when you’re having an allergic reaction, but to what you were doing before it happened- what caused it? (Because you want to avoid these situations as much as possible in the future.) Sometimes, you can’t win - especially in the height of spring, or what I like to call “pollen season”. If the air you’re breathing is what’s making you miserable, you just have to do your best. Not much you can control there. But there are other things you can control. We have a shared kitchen in our coworking space, a nd we often prep our lunches up there. At peak lunch hours, the dishwasher is usually full, meaning I have to hand-wash any dishes I have. After (joyfully) cleaning my silverware one day, I walked away from the sink and spontaneously hived out all over my hands and wrists. My best guess is that the sponge had some sort of nut butter or other allergens on it. Can this be avoided? Probably not entirely - but now, I consciously check the sponge before washing my dishes, or I wait until I can put them in the dishwasher.Tracking down the possible triggers of your allergies can be annoying, but if it saves you even one allergic reaction in the future, I think it’s well worth it.2. Don’t suffer in silenceFrom Aliya - On my first day at Career Contessa, my boss was kind enough to organize a welcome pizza lunch. Which is great … if you have the ability to consume gluten, tomato, and dairy. I, unfortunately, do not possess that ability. At the risk of sounding like an eye-roll inducing fad dieter (being in LA didn’t help), I decided the best thing to do was to let everyone know that despite how much I wanted to participate in this pizza party, I could consume ~0 pizza. I expressed how thankful I was and mentally-prepped myself to answer obligatory “What will happen to you if you eat that?” questions. Instead, I learned that several of our team members have a multitude of their own dietary constrictions. Turns out, I wasn’t the only weird one! This may seem like a very trivial example, but the moral of the story is: you are not alone and you don’t have to suffer in silence. You certainly don’t need to overshare either, but you’d be surprised at how many people have similar problems. Honest communication is key, especially when you have a bad allergy attack. Communicate with your boss if you need to work from home or have to leave early to go to your doctor appointment. Prioritize your health and well-being, because jobs are interchangeable- you are not. 3. Water is your BFFFrom Jacq - Water is truly the key to life. Feeling a headache coming on? Drink water. Throat starting to itch? Chug water. Is your skin becoming inflamed and turning a bright, burning shade of red? Rinse it off ASAP with - you guessed it - water!Seriously, though - water is a natural antihistamine. When you’re not drinking enough, you’re dehydrated (duh), which actually produces histamines in the body - cueing an allergy response. Water also decreases the amount of mucus produced in your body. If you stay hydrated, you just might be able to actually breathe through your nose properly. What a dream!Pro Tip (From Aliya): Get a reusable straw for your (reusable) water cup. Not only is it better for the environment, it makes drinking more fun, which means more water intake and a healthier you!4. Go see a doctorFrom Aliya - We probably (definitely) should have mentioned this first, but a key aspect of managing your allergies is to have an understanding of wha t you’re actually allergic to. Allergies are ridiculously frustrating. Sometimes you may have to go to several doctors to figure out what you’re allergic to, only to find out that what you’re allergic to is, essentially, the air you breathe.Over the years, I’ve seen several dermatologists and allergists. Many times, I was told that my eczema was “just something you’re going to have to live with for the rest of your life.” Most recently, I’ve turned to acupuncture and eastern medicine. My new doctor may poke needles in me as I lay in a dark room, softly listening to Korean ballads, but this is the first time I’ve seen results. The point is, find what (or who) works for you. You don’t have to suffer perpetually without a solution.5. Have your allergy pack handyYou never really know when allergies are going to strike. So it’s best to be prepared. Maybe even over-prepared. While traveling to an event together, Aliya and I discovered that we both carry “allergy pac ks” with us to make sure that we’re ready to respond if we start feeling funky. We’d like to note that we aren’t trying to promote taking medicine, or certain brands of products in particular. We’re simply sharing what we do, in hopes that it may help someone out there who needs some recommendations. We’re not sponsored, and we’re not being paid to mention any of these brands. Just offering advice from one allergy sufferer (or two) to another.Just choose a cute little bag, and put all of your allergy-attack essentials in there. Carry whatever helps you feel better when you start having symptoms. Here’s what we include in our packs.Aliya’s Allergy Pack Essentials: Zyrtec: Helps keep the itching down and doesn’t make you drowsy. Vaseline: Cute lil mini vaseline to keep your lips moisturized. Moisturizer: I keep a travel size amount of Eucerin moisturizer on me at all times. It’s great for sensitive skin because it doesn’t have any fragrances. When my skin is feeling extra inflamed, I add a few drops of tea tree oil to give it an extra minty/cooling effect. Eye drops: My optometrist recommended Opcon so I’ve been using that and it’s done the trick. Jacq’s Allergy Pack Essentials: Benadryl/Claritin/Zyrtec: Aliya obviously has a trusted brand, but I like to have different medicines ready to go- depending on what my symptoms are. Zyrtec is for the stereotypical itchy eyes, runny nose situation. Benadryl works best when my skin is freaking out. And Claritin is if I’m feeling the cloudy-head overall allergies-are-killing-me-today day. Hair ties: When I’m having an allergy day, I’m already slightly annoyed. And hair in my face- where I’m already feeling puffy and sensitive- is an absolute no. Eye Drops: My allergist recommended Zaditor to me, and I’ve found it really helps relieve the itchiness. It doesn’t help with the redness, so I usually carry redness reliever eye drops too. Inhaler: Just in case my lungs start to get wheezy. Epi Pen: Just in case I eat peanuts and start going into anaphylaxis. 6. Pack your sunniesFrom Aliya - Not only will sunglasses make you look cool and aloof, they are also great at covering up the fact that your eyes looked like they were stung by two bees. Wearing sunglasses is also a great way to protect your eyes from allergens, wind, and sun, all of which can worsen your condition. Did I mention they look cool as all heck?7. Bring your own snacksFrom Jacq - No one likes feeling left out. I learned early on (think: growing up with three siblings who could eat whatever they wanted, and didn’t really care if you couldn’t eat it too) that it doesn’t matter what everyone else is eating if you have your own treats to look forward to. I carry chocolate with me pretty much all the time. I also pack my lunches most days, and bring foods I know I like to eat. That way, when the office has a “Bagel Thursday” and I’m stuck eating my oatmeal, I feel better when I think of the delicious food I get to eat later.I also recommend bringing in your snacks to share with the office- which I understand is easier when you have a five-person team. But if you can get everyone else to enjoy the food you can eat, it’s easier to find “group” snacks and treats, when the time comes. Remember that chocolate I mentioned? I shared with the office one day, and everyone fell in love with it- it’s sitting in our fridge because we’re all obsessed. Now, when everyone else feels like indulging, I can too.Pro Tip (From Aliya): Peeping in here to say that I second this advice. A particular brand of Aliya-friendly plantain chips have garnered a lot of love in our office since I first introduced them back in early 2018.8. Find an allergy allyFrom Jacq - Odds are, you’re not the only one in the office that’s suffering. Other people in your office space will likely have diet restrictions, pollen intolerances, or skin issues of their own. Because you’re open and honest about your own experiences (see tip number two), you’ll be a safe place f or your coworkers to talk about their own. Heck, I know more about my own allergies just from talking with Aliya about hers. This article first appeared on Career Contessa.

DoD Program Gives Jobs Priority to Relocated Military Spouses

DoD Program Gives Jobs Priority to Relocated Military Spouses DoD Program Gives Jobs Priority to Relocated Military Spouses DoD Program Gives Jobs Priority to Relocated Military Spouses Being married to someone serving active duty presents many challenges, from making a home on a military base to moving many times, around the country or around the world. But if your family depends in part on your employment income, finding a new job each time your spouse gets a PCS order (permanent change of station) may be the most daunting hurdle you face. Keeping military families happy â€" fiscally and psychically â€" is one reason the Department of Defense (DoD) in 1989 created the Military Spouse Preference Program. Also known as Program S, this   valuable service that matches professional military spouses with competitive DoD job openings isn’t widely known â€" in part due to its complex rules for qualifying and applying. “The Military Spouse Preference Program can be a huge help to military families that receive a PCS order, but you have to understand the ins and outs,” says Bobby Winn  , director of DoD’s Priority Placement Program for military spouses. We’re here to give you a basic outline of Program S so you can decide whether it’s for you and understand how to get rolling with the program. Am I Eligible for Program S? The eligibility criteria for the Military Spouse Preference Program are multifaceted, but here’s the basic idea: If your military spouse receives a PCS order, you are likely eligible to receive priority consideration for a variety of permanent DoD jobs  in the stateside region you’re moving to â€"  if your   application is rated best qualified for the relevant occupational series. In this situation, you may receive priority non-competitive appointment for a competitive DoD job announcement. That’s a big deal; how can you get in on it? How Do I Enter the Program to Get Priority Consideration? As soon as you and your military spouse move to a new permanent duty station (PDS) â€" or ideally 30 days before   â€" make an appointment with the human resources officer (HRO) at the station to register for Program S. It might be difficult to get a positive response to your request for a meeting; be persistent with the HRO. Before the appointment, ask the HRO to provide an up-to-date checklist of the paperwork that you’re required to have on hand â€" these will include your marriage certificate, a detailed resume and other documents. “The specific requirements of Program S have changed over the years, and they’re likely to change again,” says Winn. At the conclusion of your appointment, be sure the HRO hands you your Program S registration form. How Should Program S Fit into My Overall Job-Search Strategy? If you’ve written an effective narrative resume, with a little luck and a best qualified rating,  before too long you’ll receive email notification of a potential job match. If time goes by and you receive no positive word, you may need to beef up your resume to be matched with additional occupational series, for example. In any case, you should continue searching USAJobs for additional federal announcements in the DoD or other federal agencies; there’s no reason to put all of your job-search eggs in the Military Spouse Preference Program basket. What Happens If Program S Matches Me with a Job Announcement? If you receive an email matching you with a potential job, it’s very good news. But you’ll still need to apply for the specific opening and receive a formal job offer. Here’s one catch: If you’re offered a permanent position through Program S and you decline it, you’ll be disqualified from the program as along as you remain at your current PDS. But whether or not you’re offered or accept a DoD job through the program, if your spouse receives another PCS order and you continue to qualify, you can pursue a new Program S job match at the new PDS.   Where Can I Go for More Information? To learn more about how Program S works and whether you qualify, consult with this fact sheet on the Military Spouse Preference Program. If you want help preparing your detailed narrative resume for submission to the program, The Resume Place can lend its experience and expertise to make the process easier for you and to improve your chances of success. After a 20-year delay, over 53,000 works have entered the public domain

After a 20-year delay, over 53,000 works have entered the public domain After a 20-year delay, over 53,000 works have entered the public domain It’s been 20 years since a large swathe of films, books and songs have come of age to find their way into the public domain. Though some works may have lapsed if their copyright wasn’t renewed correctly, January 1, 2019, marked the first time in two decades that an entire year-worth of artistic production became free and open to the public. The lapse in public domain content occurred after Congress decided in 1998 to extend copyright protections by 20 years, meaning that everything that was supposed to enter the public domain in 1999 under past law didn’t. The delay has made it so that more than 53,000 pieces of content (movies, literature, art, music and more)  from 1923 are just now becoming free and accessible.Unfortunately, because of the long gap between original publication and entrance into the public domain, a lot of content has been lost to deterioration over time, according to Duke Law School’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain. But there are still exciting t itles that are suddenly available to anyone who wants to access or use them. Not only can they be taught in the classroom or performed without getting rights, but they can also be fodder for new adaptations in the 21st century. So look out for a lot of flappers and bootlegging in your upcoming arts diet; chances are creators will be taking advantage of this treasure trove of public domain content. And if you’re interested in looking into all of this yourself, here’s a list of some of the titles that all became part of the public domain as of January 1, 2019, courtesy of Duke University:Films Safety Last! 6 Tips For Finding A Job In Todays Competitive Market

6 Tips For Finding A Job In Today's Competitive Market 6 Tips For Finding A Job In Today's Competitive Market In today's tough job market, those looking for work will have to try extra hard to attract the attention of potential employers with a well-written resume and cover letter that highlights their relevant skills and helps them stand out from a crowded field of qualified applicants.   Sometimes that’s not even enough.   Competition is good, especially if you’re winning.   Here’s how to get on top and get the job you want: Be honest.   Job seekers who have been out of work for a while, either due to the economic downturn or personal reasons, need to make sure their resume and cover letter reflects their desire to get back into the workforce and show that they have an understanding of how their chosen industry has changed since they last worked. Write a resume from the bottom up.   According to Fox Business News, many hiring managers actually scan a resume from the bottom up to make sure it tells a story with no illogical transitions. Resumes should have a solid, concise theme.   A mistake in your resume is all it takes to lose out on a potential employment opportunity. Assess.   Candidates need to assess their job skills to make sure they are relevant to the positions they will be applying to and to make sure they are in line with their long-term career goals. Many recruiters and hiring managers will want to know where a job seeker sees themselves over the next 5 to 10 years, so candidates need to be prepare to talk about why they are attracted to the industry and their future aspirations. Write a compelling cover letter.   Job seekers should think of their cover letter as their first introduction to a potential employer. It should be personalized and emphasize the qualifications already included in a resume. Just like the resume, a cover letter should also be concise and straightforward. Practice interviewing skills.   Often times a hiring manager will set up a quick 15-minute phone interview to use as a screening process in order to evaluate whether the candidate is potentially a good fit for their company. Job seekers should prepare two to three stories that highlight their work experience that focus on relevant work-related themes.   Once a job seeker is called in for a face-to-face meeting, they should be prepared to expand on their work experience and talk about how they would approach doing the job if hired. Use social media to enhance online branding.   A number of recent studies have found that more recruiters are using social networking websites to find qualified candidates. Job seekers should make sure they have a strong online professional presence that will help them brand themselves as an expert in their field. Published Courtesy of Brafton
